Opinion: What the 'American Dirt' author and I have in common

My mother is Puerto Rican, my father is Irish. I'm not fluent in Spanish and I look white. My ethnic background is close to Jeanine Cummins, the author of the novel "American Dirt." Do people like me -- or Cummins -- have the right to call ourselves Latinx?
